HarvestFest 2018

October 1, 2018 By Summer Orr

Our Autumn display is ready for its closeup, and it’s beary cute!

Sevierville Chamber of Commerce HarvestFest Competition 2018

Each year, many local businesses enter a friendly competition by the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce to compete for the best fall display. Businesses are given a list of items to incorporate into their display, and the result is a pumpkin-spiced Smoky Mountain town ready to welcome thousands of autumn guests!

Smoky the Bear, Wildfires

I say “friendly” competition, but I’ve gotta say… Mom can get a bit competitive this time of year. ha! She loves decorating, so adding the competition really gets the wheels turning. This past month, this huge wicker bear greeted many of us in the back office. And by greeted, I mean scared-to-death those of us who weren’t expecting a 7′ bear in the mail room. I gotta say though- he’s very cute as an outdoor “Smokey the Bear.” Remember, “Only you can prevent wildfires!”

And that gigantic bear was the inspiration behind all the bear-crows in this year’s display. I feel like this group should be called the Pumpkin-Dumplin’ Gang. Perfect spot for a photo-op!

Pumpkin Dumplin' Gang at Hidden Mountain Resort

Don’t miss this scene from Goldilocks and the 3 bears:

Goldilocks and the 3 Bears at Hidden Mountain Resort. HarvestFest 2018

Such a cute Goldilocks! I’m going to have to post an Instagram story about this TV… great to see it looking good on the lawn!

Goldilocks scarecrow visits the Smoky Mountains for HarvestFest 2018

This little cabin… Can you believe Dad and crew built it for a local Christmas parade? When my cousins, siblings, and I were much, much smaller, this cabin was on the back of a truck, and we were piled inside throwing candy out the windows- Good times!

Harvestfest at Hidden Mountain

If you’re out enjoying the display, the only thing we ask is please use extra caution-especially with children! This display sits on Apple Valley Road, and we ask you to stay off the road. There is a rough stone path that leads from our office parking area behind the sign and over to the grassy area.  Please use common sense and explore at your own risk!

If you are taking autumn photos with/of the display, the offices, The Lodge, or The River Lodge, we’d love to see them! Please share your photos with us on Instagram and Facebook by tagging them #hiddenharvest, and we’ll repost some of our favorites! We hope to see you soon in the Smokies!

Favorite Fall Festivals in the Smokies 2018

September 28, 2018 By Summer Orr

Hey y’all!

I hope this post finds you enjoying a wonderful fall season! There is so much good stuff happening in the Smoky Mountains this time of year! And I love taking a moment to remember that the autumn rainbow starting to appear outside our window, the festivals, the thousands of guests- none of it would be happening if not for God’s majestic and awe-inspiring creation surrounding us. We hope you have planned a trip to visit this fall, and we hope you find a few events and activities to enjoy while you’re here!

Festivals, in order by date:

September 28- November 3
Dollywood’s Great Pumpkin LumiNights
Dollywood is a family favorite, and it’s a fun way for kids to enjoy a spooky (not scary) October in the Smokies. They’ve doubled the size of the festival this year!

October 1,2,3,5
Love Loud Corn Maze
You don’t hear the word “FREE”very often, but this corn maze is FREE! There’s even a hay maze for the youngest visitors. Thank you FBC, Sevierville!

October 4-21
Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair
Enjoy crafters from across the US and get a head start on your Christmas shopping at this 43rd annual fair!

October 5,6,7
Robert A. Tino’s Smoky Mountain Homecoming
Enjoy Appalachian fun just outside the farmhouse gallery door of  local artist Robert A. Tino. Kids activities on Saturday and Sunday include a pick-and-paint pumpkin patch, old fashioned games, mule-pulled wagon rides and more. With plenty of mountain music, southern foods, and craft vendors, this is a great way to spend a weekend in the Smokies!

October 19-21
Wears Valley Fall Fest
From fair food to art vendors to a petting zoo and face painting, this festival packs it all into a wonderful weekend in the Valley. This festival is about 1/2 way between Pigeon Forge and Townsend. I recommend arriving early or there is a good chance you’ll be in traffic on this 2-lane road. The good news is you’ll be in the mountains and the kettle corn is amazing!

Favorite Autumn Activities, in no particular order:

Cades Cove Ranger-Led Evening Hayrides
Call for details and for the schedule 865-448-9009.
These are loaded on a first come, first served basis, so plan to arrive early. The stables are about an hour from Hidden Mountain, and may be a bit longer depending on traffic. Pack a jacket, blankets, and maybe even a snack for the 1.5-2 hour journey around the cove.
Daytime rides are offered as well, but I like the evening visit. Dusk is a good time for wildlife to be out and about also!

Picnic in the Park
Pack a basket or stop by Publix for a sandwich, chips, and drink, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by autumn’s beauty!
Some of my favorite picnic areas are Chimneys Picnic Area, Metcalf Bottoms, and Greenbrier, but you can see the full list at the link above.
Metcalf Bottoms is the closest to Hidden Mountain. Many picnic sites are on the river, so pack some water shoes, towels, maybe a change of clothes in case you find a slick rock and fall in…)

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Sometimes you just want to enjoy the scenery from your car, and that’s okay, too! Spend some time on this nature trail for cars, and you’ll get to experience the views of a hike without all the footwork. 😉

Horseback Riding at Waldens Creek Stables
Located about 10 minutes from Hidden Mountain West, this family-owned stable company has a great selection of guided horseback rides. Meander up and down mountain trails, splash through creeks, enjoy some local lore, and imagine a time when horseback riding was a way of life for everyone.

Autumn Shopping Favorites:

Apple Barn & Cider Mill
Of course! But not just because we consider them neighbors. It’s apple season in the Smokies, y’all! Enjoy fresh cider, warm fried pies, and plenty of apple and autumn decor, gifts, and more! In addition to the Barn & Cider Mill, visit the Candy Shop, Creamery, Winery, Christmas Shop and Applewood Farmhouse Restaurants!

Tanger Outlets at Five Oaks
This is another obvious shopping choice, but for the month of October, if you visit the website or the mall office, you can buy a PINK card for $10 and save 25% off one item at a large selection of shops! It’s a great deal supporting Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Stages West, Pigeon Forge
If all that time in the saddle- or just in the mountains- connected you with your inner cowgirl or cowboy, mosey on over to Stages West. Not only is the store itself a sight to see, but they have a tremendous selection of boots, hats, and clothing for all ages!

Well this should fill up a weekend or two, so I’ll stop. We are so blessed to be able to welcome guests to share in this spectacular season in the Great Smoky Mountains! We hope you find as much delight, warmth, and family fun in this season as we do! Now go make some memories!

Before-and-After: “Angels Among Us” Master Suite

September 10, 2018 By Summer Orr

We don’t usually show before and after, but why not? It’s amazing how cabins can be transformed, and I love seeing how styles change. It wasn’t that long ago that every guest wanted a huge whirlpool or jetted tub. Now, we see the trend going toward over-sized walk-in showers. From marble to tile to river rock, the possibilities are endless!

Here is 4063’s master bedroom and bathroom before:

BEFORE The Master Suite was still very nice and was open to the whirlpool tub and vanity.
BEFORE: A stall shower and toilet were in a closed room. There was a single vanity.

And here is the incredible transformation:

AFTER: The new Master Bath allows for privacy with a rolling barn door.
AFTER: Double vanities and a shower room add a luxury feel to the master bathroom.
AFTER: The mountain stream seems to flow right through the new shower room!
AFTER: The woodsy theme continues, as the sinks appears to be set in tree stumps.

What a difference! View more photos of 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom “Angels Among Us” here: https://www.hiddenmountain.com/listings/angels-among-us

A Labor Day story

September 3, 2018 By Summer Orr

Do you have family stories that you’ve heard all your life- maybe so much that you just kind of dismiss them now? Then one day, when you’re grown up a little- maybe they sink in a bit more? This happened to me last week as I overheard Mom talking about when her parents moved their family into a 3-room “cabin” with 10 kids and no water or electricity. Thinking of my 1 child and what would happen if the power went out, I think I heard a record scratch as I said,”Wait. What now?”

Two hours later, and just in time for Labor Day, I  had a story of hard work and perseverance and how their family just refused to give up.

My mom is matriarch of Hidden Mountain Resort, Brenda Smith. She and my dad, Butch Smith, started Hidden Mountain Resort in 1981. How the resort started is a story I’ve told before and I’ll share again another day. But this story goes back to when my Mom had just graduated high school in Vonore, TN. Her youngest brother, Chuck, was born the day of her high school graduation. He was #14 of 14 children. (Mom was #4.) My Papaw and Mamaw were C.B. (Coy Burl) & Bonnie McCarter.

Papaw was an auctioneer and a farmer. He’d had a terrible tractor accident that took quite a lot of time to recover from. When a second tractor accident re-opened old wounds and left him unable to work his dairy farm, the doctor told him that if he didn’t get away from work and all the stress he was under, he wouldn’t live to see his youngest son reach 21. In April, 1966, Papaw and Mamaw held a 3-day dispersal auction and sold everything from their dairy farm in Vonore, TN. They moved back here to Wears Valley to let the younger kids finish their school year.

Mom had been working in Papaw’s auctioneering office in Sevierville with her older sister Glenda, when Papaw came in one day with her brothers Lee and Scottie. He announced that he was moving to middle Tennessee. He’d seen an ad offering 1,000 acres of land for $10,000, bought it and was moving the family to it so he could recover. Mom started packing up her desk, and he asked what she was doing. She was going with him. Although he tried to protest, she insisted that she come and help with all the kids. Glenda agreed to stay in Sevierville to keep the office running. Some of the other siblings were married, so they were staying, also.

They eventually got on the road to their new home. The first ones to go were Papaw, Mom (18), Lee, Scotty, Kay (10), and Mary (5). On the way to the farm, Papaw got sleepy driving. He pulled over on the side of the road, unloaded 2 mattresses and quilts and told everyone to go to sleep.

The next day, they made it to the home of the people selling the land. Papaw, Lee, and Scottie were going into the office to settle up, and they told Mom that she could find the cabin if she followed the tracks in the old road. Mom owned 2 skirts, 2 blouses, and 1 pair of shoes. Kay and Mary had one pair of shoes also. To keep from getting them dirty, they took the shoes off and headed off into the woods barefoot.

Mom said the woods were very dense. Before too long, the skies darkened and a torrential downpour started- washing out the tire tracks! They took a wrong turn, and walked so far that they ended up on what’s known today as Buzzard Rock overlooking the entire valley. Mom knew they were lost. They turned around and started running back the way they had come. Kay and Mary were crying. Mom was praying for help. After awhile, she heard Papaw calling for her through the woods. Whew! They had made it. Mom said she was shaking all over- freezing and scared. Papaw estimated that they’d gone 5 miles out of the way! When they finally made it to the little cabin, Papaw told her to get some dinner ready for them. So she did.  This was the Fourth of July.

This is an excerpt from my Aunt Kay’s memories during this time. She was 10:
Daddy saw an ad in the paper for a farm for sale in Altamont, TN, which he and mama decided to purchase. Daddy, Lee, and Scottie built a tiny 3 room cabin out of rough sawed lumber, covered it in black tar paper & installed a shingle roof. In July 1966, we moved to Altamont. The cabin did not have electricity or indoor plumbing. We had a wood cook stove where Mama prepared delicious meals. We carried fresh water from the nearby spring for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Mama used a wash board & clothes line for doing the laundry. Forest trees were all around us. We literally had to look straight up to see the blue sky. Daddy had a shotgun and would often go hunting which provided fresh meat for our family. That summer we worked to help clear some of the fields. That fall our main road to our cabin had not been completed & it was a very long walk on an old logging road through a small creek to catch the school bus.

This 3-room cabin housed Mamaw, Papaw, and 10 kids for 8 months. Papaw and Mamaw’s bed was built into the kitchen/living room. The babies had cribs in this room, also. There were 2 full-size wooden bunks built against the wall in another room. Aunt Kay said she and Mary shared a cot- each sleeping at one end of the cot at night and folding it away during the day.

Mom stopped the story and said, “Do you remember the 3 room chicken coop at Mamaw and Papaw’s farm? That was where we lived.” And I do remember that coop- it’s where all the baby and teenage chicks lived until they were ready for the big coop. My cousin Wesley and I loved to play in there when I came to visit the farm in the summers.  It was great for chickens but impossible to imagine for a large family.

Back to the story- Papaw and the boys cut pulpwood to sell so they had some income for food and supplies. They were clearing some of the land to build a bigger home next door. In the meantime, mom and her brother Lee started thinking about winter coming. Knowing that they wouldn’t be able to cut wood in the winter, Mom and Lee decided that, as the 2 oldest ones living at home, they needed to find jobs. They talked about it, got a plan together, and went to talk to Papaw. Again, he protested. He didn’t want them to give up on their own dreams. But they finally convinced him that they wouldn’t make it through the winter without this additional income.

Lee found a job at the Western Auto, and Mom found a job folding shirts at a shirt factory. Lee was able to work the same schedule as Mom so he could drop her off in the morning and pick her up on his way home. Mom said she was paid $45/week, plus an additional $2.50 if she made production. After the first week, she made production, which upset her co-workers who weren’t in the habit of making production. Mom persevered telling them she was sorry, but she needed the money for her family.

While they worked, Papaw was regaining health. Mom and Lee were (and still are) big encouragers. They remained positive and continued to encourage and help Papaw. While some people told him to declare bankruptcy, it wasn’t what he wanted to do. He wanted to pay back the money he owed.  He began having small auctions again in middle Tennessee. In 1967, they moved into a larger home with electricity and water next door to the little “cabin.” Then they added some auctions back in Sevierville. Soon, he was working between both places and slowly but surely paying off his debts.

In 1969, the family moved back to Sevierville. One of the largest debts Papaw owed was to Charlie Blalock, patriarch of Blalock & Sons. Papaw told him that if he wanted to come to his auctions and choose property that he would pay him back in land. Charlie had graciously agreed to this. Charlie even agreed to become a 25% partner in what became Papaw’s most successful auction. Charlie cut the roads in and on Labor Day, 1969, Papaw held the auction of the Greater Marshall Woods II subdivision. This sale was a tremendous success and made Papaw very well-known in the auctioneering world. He was asked to speak in different states, and he always took the entire family to the National Auctioneer Association Conventions, where their family photos always made the paper.

This is most of the family and a few spouses at one of the NAA Conventions.

Papaw never gave up or quit working. He paid his debts and regained his reputation. He took care of his family. It’s why his 14 children and their families can hold their heads up and be proud of him and each other today. After his passing in 1989, Papaw was inducted into the National Auctioneer Association Hall of Fame in 1990.

Aunt Kay ended her notes with this:
“I am proud of the men & women my siblings have become. The tough times we encountered together as a family only served to make us all stronger.
NOTHING WE DO IN LIFE IS A WASTE OF TIME IF IT ADDS TO THE CHARACTER OF THE PERSON WE BECOME.”

Three of the 14 McCarter siblings work at Hidden Mountain today. Kay Green is our Group Sales Coordinator. Joe McCarter helps on Front Desk and is also a contractor- he is building a new cabin now at Hidden Mountain East! And my mom, Brenda Smith.

If you find yourself in the trenches on this Labor Day, I hope this story is encouraging to you. Seek and trust God, work hard, appreciate and honor your family, and keep moving forward.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

(I’ve told this story as shared by my Mom and my Aunt Kay, our Group Sales Coordinator. When there are 14 siblings, you may get 14 different versions of a story, but these are their remembrances.)

Welcome to Hidden Mountain’s new website!

May 25, 2018 By Summer Orr

Hello Friends,

I wanted to take a moment to tell you about our new site. We hope you find it easy-to-navigate and easy to find information about our home and Reserve Your Stay!

To explain a few of the changes, I’m going to walk through the Home Page and then the Menu Bar.

(Please note that you can access the Home Page by clicking on our the Hidden Mountain logo from any page.)

HOME PAGE– from the top down.
1) At the very top, you’ll see a Banner message with Latest News and Announcements from the Resort!

2) Next, you’ll find our Contact Information, a “View Favorites” button, and a Search bar.
When you are viewing cabin listings, if you click the Green Heart, that unit will be added to your Favorites. You can click the Green Heart again to remove it from your Favorites. Once you have added units, you can click “View Favorites” from the Home Page to immediately access your favorite units! In the Search Bar, you can enter a Cabin Name or Number to go directly to that home or you can search for anything you want to find on the site, such as “Attractions.”

3) Next, you’ll see our Main Menu.

Under “Rentals,” you can browse our homes based on bedroom number. You can also link to our Sites at The Dell or you can link to an Advanced Search options, where you can Search for homes based on Bedroom number, Occupancy, Location, or Featured Amenities.

Under “Sales,” you can find information on Homes and Lots that are available through our Real Estate department. We only sell Hidden Mountain property. You will notice that Cabin Listings accessed from the Sales page offer a bit different information. In addition to rental information, you will find asking price, year built, square footage, and real estate specific information.

Under “Weddings & Events,” you will (temporarily) be redirected to www.hiddenmountainweddings.com. Here, you can find information on our Event Venues, Booking policies, and contact information for Kay Green, our Group Sales Coordinator. But stay tuned, we will be updating this link soon!

Under “Find Us,” you will find Directions and a graphic map of our location, East & West office information, Driving Directions, and East & West resort maps.
There is also an option to “Contact Us.” Here, you can email us based on what you are emailing us about- Reservation Information, Real Estate questions, General Resort Information (Front Desk), or Group Sales information.

Under “Discover,” you can find information on everything from our family, blog, resort, and rental policies to Local Resources, Wedding & Event Vendors, and Area Attractions!

4) Back on the Home Page, you may first notice the Check Availability bar. If you know your dates, go ahead and check availability here! The “Check Availability” button takes you into our booking system. You can book your reservation online 24/7! To return to the main website, you can either hit the back arrow or click to view “Details” for any unit, and it will link you back to the Unit’s Description page on our site.

5) Below the aerial resort imagery, you can find graphic blocks with direct links to “Wedding & Events”, “The Dell”, “Hidden Mountain Realty”, and “Resort Amenities.”

6) Continue scrolling the Home Page, and you will see a Welcome message and a video overview of Hidden Mountain Resort. We will also post seasonal messages here!

7) View a selection of Featured Units. These will change frequently, and they may be based on homes that have recently been updated or remodeled or homes that still have Availability!

8) Below the selection of Featured Units, you can view every home we have available for rent- in no particular order- by choosing “View All Listings.”

9) In the footer, you will again see our Local Contact Information, a Site Map, our Mission Statement, and an area to sign up for our e-newsletters. We generally send 2-3 emails per month that feature events, attractions, resort news, seasonal specials, email-only Flash Sales, new real estate listings, and featured cabins.

So that’s the Home Page! Let’s look at few other pages:

Cabin listings page

Cabin Listing pages:
When you see a page of multiple listings, you’ll find the Advanced Search bar above the listings to help further narrow your search. Now, you can easily see the Name, Number, Location, # Bedrooms, # Bathrooms, Occupancy, and link to the Cabin Detail page under each listing.  (Location can be 1 of 5 options: East Cabin, West Cabin, Old Homeplace Cottage, East Villa, or The Dell.) These pages are also good for clicking a few Green Hearts (Add to Favorites) to easily compare favorite homes later.

Cabin Detail Pages:
I love how clean these new pages are, and I hope you do too! In addition to the cabin information carried forward from the Listing Page, you can easily see if the unit is Pet Friendly or Not Pet Friendly and what type of grill and fireplace(s) it offers.
Checking Availability is easy, as well, with the large green button!  Below the Check Availability button, you will see 2 tabs: Amenities and Description.

Under the “AMENITIES” tab, you will find 2 columns. On the left is a list of “Searchable Amenities.” These are amenities that you can find in the list on the Advanced Search feature at the top of the Listings pages. Click any of these amenities to visit other homes that offer these amenities, as well.  On the right side of the Amenities tab, you will see a static list of amenities that every home offers.

Cabin detail page

Click on the “DESCRIPTION” tab to see additional information specific to that cabin.

To the right of the text information, you’ll see a Photo Gallery, Video Tour, and 3D Tour of each home. There is an arrow to the right of the large photo if you would like to move quickly through the photos. Above the Photo Gallery, you will now find easy links to share cabin details via Facebook, Pinterest, or Houzz or to add this cabin to your “Favorites.”

Continue scrolling down the page to see a “ROOM DETAIL” graph. Here, you will see each bedroom numbered, the level of the house the room is located on, the type of bedding in each room, the en-suite bathroom information, and any additional amenities the bedroom provides. Please note: If a home has a bathroom, but it is not attached to a bedroom, it will not be listed here. The bathrooms not listed here are accessed from a common area in the home.

Below the Room Detail, you will see a “RESORT OVERVIEW” box. This box holds the same information on every unit. We hope it helps you decide which location is right for your family. You can view interactive resort maps that show you exactly where the cabin is located within the resort, as well as a links to our Resort Amenities gallery and Area Attractions page.

I think this will be a good start to exploring the site! Please let us know your thoughts or if you find anything not working!
We hope you find it helpful, and We hope to see you soon!
