Favorite Fall Hikes in the Smokies!

October 8, 2019 By Summer Orr

Are you dreaming of pumpkin spice lattes, hayrides, fall boots, and crisp autumn air? Well, there’s no better place to experience all Autumn has to offer than in the Smoky Mountains! Explore breathtaking views as the leaves change from shades of green to sunny yellows, vibrant oranges, and bold reds.

With almost 900 miles of hiking trails available, it’s no wonder that this is one of the most popular ways to take in all the beautiful fall foliage. So we’re giving you the inside scoop and sharing three of our favorite hikes!

  1. Laurel Falls- This is one of the most popular hiking trails in the Smoky Mountains and for good reason! Not only do you get to experience first-hand our lovely mountains, but there’s also an 80-foot waterfall at the end of the trail. Bonus: it’s one of the shortest hiking options (only 2.6 miles round-trip!) and is considered fairly easy.
  2. Abrams Falls- This trail is nestled right in the heart of Cades Cove and offers both mountain and waterfall views. While Laurel Falls is considered a beginner-friendly trail, Abrams Falls is classified as “moderate.” It’s also a bit longer of a hike at 5.2 miles round-trip.
  3. Gregory Bald- Feeling daring? Then this 11.3-mile round-trip hike may be for you! It’s the longest and most difficult of the hikes we’ve listed but the views make it absolutely worthwhile.

A few extra notes for October hiking in the Smokies:

  1. Plan extra travel time and consider an early hike. October is one of the busiest months in the Smokies with everyone hitting the roads and trails to glimpse the autumn rainbow. When planning, pad your schedule with some extra time in case you find yourself in traffic on the way to or from the trail.
  2. Wear solid shoes. From hiking sandals to hiking boots to even a solid pair of sneakers, your feet will thank you! There are plenty of outfitters located in the area, and they will be happy to make sure you have the appropriate gear for your journey. Try Uncle Lem’s Outfitters in Pigeon Forge or The Day Hiker or Nantahala Outdoor Center in Gatlinburg.
  3. Carry plenty of water! Even the short trails will have you appreciating your effort. Trail Mix and nourishing snacks are always a good idea, also.
  4. Need help selecting a trail? Sugarlands Visitor Center at the entrance to the park is a must-see, stop, shop, and visit! The rangers working here are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the Great Smoky Mountains!
  5. Remember, there is no cell service in much of the Smokies! Make sure that you leave your itinerary with someone at home. While hiking, you can preserve your mobile battery by switching your phone to airplane mode. This stops your phone from constantly searching for a signal but still allows you to take photos of your journey!

No matter which trail you choose, you’re guaranteed to have fun and enjoy gorgeous scenery and views! Happy Hiking, Friends!

Fall Fun in the Smoky Mountains! 2019 dates

September 30, 2019 By Summer Orr

Welcome to October in the Smoky Mountains! A beautiful time of changing colors, scarecrows and pumpkins, family festivals, and fun for all ages! Here are a few of our favorite events happening in the Smoky Mountain area this month.

  1. October 1,2,4,5,6, Sevierville.  “Love Loud” Corn Maze & Hayride. If you are visiting early this month, this is a FREE event hosted by FBC, Sevierville. Visit the website for hours and enjoy quality family fun to kick off the month!
  2. October 4-6, Sevierville. Robert A. Tino’s Smoky Mountain Homecoming. One of our favorite local artists puts on a fabulous fall event at his gallery. There are plenty of kid-friendly activities here, and adults will love perusing the vendors, hearing the bluegrass, and remembering a simpler time.
  3. October 10-27, Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair. Showcasing over 180 craftspeople from around the US, you’re sure to find a unique souvenir from your trip to the mountains!
  4. October 18-20, Wears Valley. Wears Valley Fall Fest. I can only remember how good the kettle corn is! With an abundance of festival foods, local color, art booths, and family activities, this is another one you’re sure to love! Arrive early to avoid the heaviest traffic.
  5. Now thru October 31. Sevierville. Kyker Farms Corn Maze. Whether you’re looking for an innocent night of fun or a terrifying maze of zombies, you’ll have a good time on this family farm!
  6. Now thru November 2, Pigeon Forge. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival & Great Pumpkin LumiNights. Enjoy Southern Gospel music concerts and pumpkin displays during the day, then be delighted with thousands of illuminated pumpkins after sundown. This event stays packed! Plan several hours and bring your patience as your family enjoys all the spooky fun of Dollywood’s LumiNights!
  7. Now thru November 2, Gatlinburg. Anakeesta’s Hallow Mountain. Visit during the daytime for autumn fun for all ages, but beware- on select nights, Anakeesta is ready to add some fright to your night!
  8. October 31, Pigeon Forge. Halloween at The Island. Enjoy a safe night of trick-or-treating at this Free event at The Island. Bonus for those in costume: Purchase a 48-hour unlimited ride pass for only $5!

Happy Fall, Y’all!
