Family-style Restaurants to Visit in the Smoky Mountains

November 6, 2020 By Summer Orr

Any good southern, family vacation includes comfort food and lots of it. We may be partial, but to us, the communities surrounding Hidden Mountain Resort offer some of the tastiest, country-cooked dishes you can find! So today, we are going to share a few local dining options we think your tastebuds will love! Grab a napkin, and let’s dig in!

Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant

The first mouthwatering stop on our journey is Sevierville’s oldest eatery, the Applewood Farmhouse. This gorgeous restaurant is located less than one mile from Hidden Mountain and offers a wide selection of tasty, down-home southern favorites. Opened in 1986, Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and its sister location Applewood Farmhouse Grill serve pancakes, omelets, chicken and dumplings, and smiles to over 1 million guests each year. We don’t think you’ll regret joining that number!

Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen

If the dishes of a famous chef served straight to your plate sound tempting, Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen is a must! Named for the world-renowned, southern cook, Paula Deen’s offers a truly unique, country dining experience. Every item on the menu comes straight from Paula’s cookbooks, and the food is enjoyed by passing dishes around the table in a setting reminiscent of family dinners of old. If you are looking to reconnect through good food and laughter, make sure to put Paula Deen’s on the itinerary.

Five Oaks Farm Kitchen

Carrying on the hospitality of the late Dr. John and Blanche Ogle, Five Oaks provides a warm, southern meal to any and all weary travelers that step inside. In this spirit, Five Oaks offers large, open dining rooms so visitors can enjoy a deeply communal meal experience. On top of incredible, in-house southern cooking, Five Oaks partners with Goodnight Brothers Country Ham to deliver salty, delectable country ham straight to your home. Even after you leave, you can still enjoy a little piece of Five Oaks wherever you are. Trust us, you will want to!

The Old Mill

Our final stop is The Old Mill. Originally opened as the Cornflour Restaurant in 1993, The Old Mill is a staple of Pigeon Forge. This sprawling restaurant serves everything from delectable pecan pie to savory fried chicken and is a southern cooking aficionado’s dream. In addition to delicious food, The Old Mill features a general store, The Farmhouse Kitchen stocked with recipes and mixes needed to create many of their signature dishes, Pigeon River Pottery, and Sassafras jewelry, apparel, and accessories. There is truly something for everyone at The Old Mill!

We are so happy you chose to stay with us and sincerely hope these recommendations lead to many good meals with those you love. If you are still planning your mountain getaway, we would love to see you at Hidden Mountain Resort. Give us a call or book online today!

Coffee Shops to Visit in the Smokies

November 6, 2020 By Summer Orr

In our opinion, every day should start with a delicious cup of coffee. Luckily, there are plenty of wonderful options where the magical liquid can be found near Hidden Mountain Resort, and today we are going to look at the ones we love the most! Cream and sugar? Let’s get started!

Coffee & Company

This European, cottage style coffee shop sits tucked among the 30 storefronts of the Village in Gatlinburg. The coffee here is roasted in-house, and you can even buy freshly roasted, single-serve coffee pods to brew once back home! With a wide variety of flavored coffee and tea options, this quaint shop is a “must-stop” while walking the famous Gatlinburg strip.

The Coffee Armory

Does a limited selection of boldly flavored coffees and espresso drinks pique your interest? If so, Coffee Armory is for you! Serving varieties of Black Rifle Coffee, the veteran-owned Coffee Armory is built for the hardcore, full-flavor coffee lover. Strong, delicious cups of joe crafted by and for American patriots!

Honeybee Coffee

Honeybee is new to Sevierville but a fixture in the East Tennessee coffee world and for good reason. The team at Honeybee sources their own beans, and roasts them to exacting standards, in-house. Featuring a dedicated crew and delicious coffee for passionate bean connoisseurs. Their lavender honey latte is already a local favorite.

We hope this blog helps you find the perfect cup of coffee during your stay at Hidden Mountain Resort! For those who haven’t booked with us yet, we are just a call away!

Outdoor Family Friendly Activities to do in the Smokies!

May 18, 2020 By Summer Orr

Spring is here and summer is right around the corner, which means it’s the perfect time for family bonding in the great outdoors! Ditch your phones (or at least switch them to airplane mode so you can still take photos) and come have an adventure in our beautiful Smoky Mountains instead! We’ve found some great options that could be perfect for your family.

TUBING, BOATING, AND WHITE WATER RAFTING

Need something that will beat that summer heat? Then try a water activity! For a relaxed family getaway, spend the day tubing down one of Tennessee’s river ways or rent a pontoon and enjoy the day on Douglas Lake. If your family is up for a little more excitement, try white water rafting! There are various spots near Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg that offer these fun-filled water activities. Check out some of of our favorites here:
Smoky Mountain River Rat Tubing
Lighthouse Pointe Marina & Boat Rentals
Rafting in the Smokies

HIKING

We couldn’t tell you to come to the Smoky Mountains and not tell you to hike, could we? Best of all, this is a free activity! There are a variety of trials so that whether you have kids in strollers or active teenagers, you can find a path that suits your family’s needs. Need an easy trail? We recommend Laurel Falls! It’s mostly paved and is only a 2.6 round-trip hike. So it’s perfect if you have littles in your life. Plus, you’ll get to see an 80-foot waterfall! No bad for such a short hike!
Nervous about hiking for the first time in the Smokies or searching for challenging new path in the backcountry? Try a guided hike with Smoky Mountain Guides!

 ZIPLINING

If you’re not scared of heights, then ziplining may be the perfect way to get a unique view of all our Great Smoky Mountains have to offer. We recommend Foxfire Mountain Adventures! From scenic ziplines over waterfalls to “The Goliath” zipline, guests to Foxfire Mountain will have plenty of fun options. And if you have a few in your crew that aren’t up for heights, try out the ATV tours here. Enjoy the scenic beauty of our mountains without having to break a sweat!

No matter what activity you choose to do, your family is sure to have a blast! The best part will be that you’re doing it all together. We can’t wait for you to try one of these and make some sweet new memories!

Love is in the air and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. So have you considered treating yourself and your sweetheart to a romantic weekend getaway to the Smoky Mountains? (We promise you’ll both love it!)

But while you’re here, you’ll want to know the best dining experiences around. So we’ve gathered up a list of some of our faves and hope you’ll get a chance to visit one of them this holiday!

For Fine Dining: The Greenbrier

Recently reopened, The Greenbrier Restaurant is located in a historic building along the ridgelines of the Smoky Mountains. The menu is classic and offers everything from fried green tomatoes to duck breast.

For Italian Lovers: Best Italian

Skip the Olive Garden and try this hole-in-the-wall restaurant that’s sure to leave your taste buds tingling! They’re tried and true and have been in business for over 40 years. You’ll find classic pizzas, creamy pastas, and homemade cheesecake as staples on their menu.

For Steak Fans: The Peddler

You just can’t beat a good steak, can you? We don’t think so! And our favorite place to get it is at The Peddler Steakhouse. But don’t worry, if steak isn’t your go-to, there’s still plenty of other options there for you to choose from!

New Attractions for Summer 2019!

June 5, 2019 By Summer Orr

Every year, the Smoky Mountain Area welcomes new attractions and theaters to entertain over 11-million visitors! And each city has its own wonderful personality-
Sevierville offers a hometown feeling with terrific shopping all the way from Bass Pro Shops to Tanger Outlets at Five Oaks! As you enter Pigeon Forge, you’ll feel like you’re driving through one giant amusement park- from the upside-down building at WonderWorks, the sinking Titanic ship, and King Kong climbing atop the Hollywood Wax Museum to putt-putt and arcades galore! Then a scenic drive we call The Spur brings our visitors into Gatlinburg- a lively mountain town with a little bit of everything, especially magnificent mountain views!

So what’s new for summer 2019?

    1. Dolly Parton’s Pirate Voyage dinner and show is Now Open in Pigeon Forge. Arrrgh you going to see it?
    2.  Skylift Park is open in Gatlinburg with North America’s longest suspension bridge, the SkyBridge, and a SkyDeck perfect for taking in the surrounding mountain views!
    3. Anakeesta in Gatlinburg has added an expansion called Vista Gardens with a 20′ “Willow Man,” challenge courses, and more.  If chairlifts and chondolas aren’t your thing, plan a visit for later this year when military style trucks will be added as a way to get up the mountain!
    4. Rowdy Bear Ridge Adventure Park has opened Year-Round Mountain Tubing in Pigeon Forge with further adventures coming soon!
    5. Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Show and Adventure Park invites you to watch the lumberjack games and then try it for yourself!
    6. National Enquirer Live will have you turning your head as you enter Pigeon Forge with a pair of gigantic hands wielding cameras to welcome you.

If you missed our Facebook Live video this week that mentioned many of these new attractions after a tour of 3-bedroom Log Cabin 4026, please check it out below and join us on Facebook for weekly Live Tours at Hidden Mountain!
P.S. We love to see and share our guests enjoying the resort and the Smokies, so please check-in on Facebook or tag your Instagram posts with #HiddenMountain.

We’ll see you soon in the Smokies!

Local Shopping in the Smokies

November 19, 2018 By Summer Orr

It’s officially time for Christmas shopping to begin! (or continue, as the case may be…)

There are so many places to shop when you’re visiting the Smoky Mountains. And have I mentioned that Hidden Mountain East is less than 5 minutes to Tanger Outlets at Five Oaks? (Psst: Have you visited the new Tory Burch outlet?)

But Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg also have some great locally-owned shops, and these are a few of our favorites:

  1. Stages West – Yes, the store is incredibly geared toward cowgirls and cowboys, but there is really something for everyone! From Chacos to Brighton and everywhere in between, it’s one of our favorite family-owned businesses in the area.
  2. Alewine Pottery– For those who really want to share a bit of the Smokies, this family-owned business makes beautiful and artistic pottery in a range of colors. With everything from spoon rests and mugs to candle holders and vases, and much more, these pottery gifts are sure to delight. And if you haven’t been to the shop in The Glades Arts & Crafts Community, it’s worth the drive just to enjoy the mountain scenery!
  3. Sweet Peas and Ivy– A charming garden and gift shop in downtown Sevierville. We particularly love the fairy garden selections!
  4. The Chest and Chair– For home decor, painted furniture, and a large gift selection, this one is a little further out in Sevierville, but the unique gifts make it worth the drive.
  5. All Sauced Up– This family-owned kitchen and sauce shop has locations in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. It’s a fun atmosphere with kitschy kitchen finds for everyone!
  6. The Apple Barn & Cider Mill – For friends and family who like fresh-baked goods, cozy apple candles, and gift baskets galore, this is a great stop! In addition to the Barn, there’s a candy shop, creamery/bakery, Christmas shop, and more!
  7. Robert A. Tino Gallery– This local artist paints such real mountain views that you may feel like you’ve stepped into a memory. Visit his gallery on Hwy 66 to find your favorite Smoky Mountain view!
  8. The Hidden Mountain gift shop, of course! Find mugs, tees, and more in our Hidden Mountain East office or give the gift of a Smoky Mountain getaway with a Hidden Mountain Gift Certificate, available at the front desk!

These are only a handful of family-owned favorites, but there are so many more shops and gifts to find!
You can view a larger list of shopping links here on our Smoky Mountain Attractions page.

Happy Shopping, friends!
